When a person asks for help with some issue in his/her life, a safe answer is to suggest counseling. Trouble with your marriage? Get counseling. Kids acting up? Send them for counseling. Have a flight get cancelled? Try some counseling!
There seems to be this assumption that any counseling is good counseling? But why would that be? What if we take the word counseling and change it to a different word with the same meaning; do we still feel the same way? For example, by counseling I think most people mean interacting with another person, and receiving feedback in the form of interpretation, clarification, or advice. How would you feel about the idea that if your kids are acting up, you should send them to a stranger and have the stranger give them advice?
There is no shortage of bad advice out there, so why is there an assumption that advice is OK, as long as someone is calling it counseling? One could say that there is the assumption that a counselor has had training, and therefore the advice will be better than the random advice one typically receives from strangers. But we all know bad doctors, and the standards to become a doctor are incredibly stringent compared to those for counseling!

There is one thing about counseling that does guarantee a certain degree of safety-- any recommendation to undergo counseling is usually ignored! But in all seriousness, the people who are referred for counseling are often vulnerable, and so the issue of whether to blindly send them for advice from strangers does deserve some consideration.

There are, of course, different types of counseling. The counseling done by advanced-degree practitioners, such as psychiatrists and psychologists, is generally referred to as therapy rather than counseling. Therapy can be broken down into different types, and some conditions are more responsive to one type of therapy than another. Therapy is placed along a continuum from supportive therapy on one end to expressive therapy on the other. Supportive therapy would be the appropriate approach for a person undergoing trauma or significant stressors; expressive therapy would be the choice for a person who wants to develop better insight into how his/her mind works.

What is supportive vs. expressive therapy? Supportive therapy is aimed at strengthening the persons defense mechanisms, as those defenses are what keep us sane during times of stress. Expressive therapy, on the other hand, is aimed at questioning assumptions, digging up repressed content, challenging long-held impressions of relationships, etc. If a person is already under a great deal of stress, and then undertakes frequent sessions of expressive therapy, he will often get worse, even to the point of psychosis.
Undergoing therapy during active addiction at first seems to suggest some contradictions. During addiction the addict is very stressed out, so wouldnt that suggest that supportive therapy would be best? Absolutely not-- when treating addiction, I WANT the person to question the assumptions and rationalizations that keep the person using. So does that mean that expressive, psychodynamic psychotherapy would be a good idea? To that I would also say no. The using addict is so full of BS that psychodynamic therapy is generally a waste of time.

There are other problems with therapy during addiction, even in recovery. A psychiatrist may see addiction in a way that runs counter to the view of an addictionologist. Psychiatrists often see addiction as a symptom of something; addictionologists on the other hand see addiction as a primary disorder, that may be the cause of psychiatric symptoms or illness. To one, addiction is a chicken, to the other, an egg!
The addictionologist worries that the addict in therapy will start to find reasons for what he is doing, when the reasons arent the issue; the point is to just stop doing it! I get this image of two extremes among my patients; both have a month of sobriety and it is time to be working full time, and one says OK and starts filling out applications without even thinking about the nature of the job, and the other sits for weeks talking about how it feels to go back to work, wondering why it feels this way, and wondering if he will always feel this way. I like the addictionologist approach in this setting, including the as if approach that I have mentioned before. You dont feel like working? Just act as if you DO feel like working, and get to work. You feel tired? Act as if you dont feel tired. To a tired, nonworking person this sounds harsh; but I am only trying to help.

This gets to the issue of the harm that the wrong therapy or therapist, can do to a patient. If we have a person in treatment who is struggling-- nobody is laughing at the cocky, stupid jokes and he is getting close to that place where he drops the cocky attitude and brings his genuine self to the treatment scene-- If at that point, a sensitive, kind therapist came on the scene and started making little poor baby faces with the person, that could completely destroy the treatment. Addiction treatment is challenging-- it takes a person who can distinguish the real person and the BS person, and use the BS persons own words back on him to try to break though the cocky front. This is the work of a good addiction counselor. There are plenty of counselors who think they are treating addiction by providing education and support, but the great counselors are the ones who are addicts themselves, who hate addiction and who come to work ready to rumble every day. In a way it is like a chess match. Knowing how hard to push, and when to push a bit harder, and then knowing when to shift gears and reel in the newly-opened mind. It is tiring work, and given that we are literally talking about saving lives, the pay is not near good enough.

There are other dangers to therapy for those in recovery from addictions. All of us in recovery have what I like to think of as the addict inside. The addict is there for one reason-- to get us to use. The addict is crafty, or as they say in AA, cunning, baffling, and powerful. The addict inside has advantages over our sober selves; the addict has access to all of our minds, including our unconscious, where our fears, lusts, prejudices, hatreds, and other powerful forces reside. The addict can use these unconscious feelings to push us to do things that may ultimately destroy us. But our sober selves have our own advantages; we get to control our arms and our legs. Sure, the addict inside can push us up down, left, right, into using once we are in a dirty bar at 3 AM; but our legs can carry our sorry heads to the edge of the bed at 10 PM and then drop us there, so that we cant get near that bar! The problem with therapy is that is does at least two things to strengthen the addict inside. First, the addict LOVES to talk; you start up that therapy, and the addict gets to start up with all the BS, and given free rein the addict will win over logic every time. The second thing is that the addict will use confidence of our sober selves to the addicts advantage, like this: I see it now! I used because I was teased on the playground, and that created this pain in my heart that never went away-- so I needed a pain killer, and I took one, to ease the pain! Sounds pretty logical-- but you have just told the addict in you about a big weakness. The next time you are in a situation that is somehow similar to being teased at the playground, the addict will be ready to tell you about how much you hurt, and about how good it would feel to medicate the pain, and about how much you deserve to be medicated. And even more-- you are now a smart guy! You had that therapy, and so you are probably OK to use just a little bit!
Right.

I am not totally down on therapy for addiction. Just dont kid yourself. One of my favorite lines from the movies is still number one, a couple decades after when the movie came out--Clint Eastwood saying A good man knows his limitations. This is important advice to any addict who would like to stay clean. Know your limitations. Having psychotherapy--even real good psychotherapy that truly adds insight doesnt make you any safer. If anything, it increases the risk that you will talk rings around yourself some day and get into more trouble. Your youngster is likely to have ongoing problems if he or she fails to receive early and comprehensive counseling. Without it, he or she will continue to be unable to adapt to the demands of adulthood.

Unfortunately, he or she will continue to be at high risk for having problems with relationships, school, effective socialization and even maintaining a job. If your kid relishes the breaking of laws and behaving antisocially, any number of factors may be contributing, including brain damage, child abuse, heredity, academic failure and/or traumatic life experiences.

Treatment of your son or daughter can be complex and challenging. However, it can be provided in a variety of different settings depending on the severity of the behavior.

The use of psychic abilities to help someone improve their situation is nothing new. The rich and powerful often have advisors that warn them of potential difficulties and give them tips on how to get around them.
What I am presenting here goes one step further than that. Using psychic counseling as a way to help a person not only avoid dangers, but address deep emotional issues and make better choices. A process that is not as one-way as traditional psychic work, where the psychic tells the person what they perceive, with little meaningful interaction and almost no personal growth on the side of the client.

The counselor should provide more than raw psychic information. The person being helped should be coached to develop their own skills and intuitions, to use their own psychic skills and talents to better their life. They should be aided in, not just making good decisions right now, but in knowing how to make good choices in the future.

I am going to cover the psychic aspects of counseling at this point, for you to add to your personal repertoire of skills. Because of space considerations I will not go into issues that pertain only to counseling, even though they are equally important to this process. For ease of use I am going to break this down by specific component, though in a counseling environment, you will want to be using all of the separate parts more holistically for best results.

Preparation- Take the time to ready yourself before your client arrives (I am using client to describe the person being helped for ease of use, it could be your friend, family member or co-worker.) most people will be more at ease if you don’t meditate in front of them for the first five minutes they are there.
Start by relaxing and settling your mind into a meditative state. Don’t be afraid of going too deep. When you begin to talk to the other person your brainwave state will tend to rise somewhat anyway, so this should not be a problem.

Acknowledge your subconscious mind, by briefly holding a single concept, without words or pictures, for a few moments. Any concept will do. Since much of your work will have to be done on a conscious level, it is not of great benefit to plunge into deep conceptual processing at this point. Still, it will help your sensitivity, so make this part of your routine.
Take time to let go of your own preconceptions. Just accept that you may have some and set them aside. This will help your ability to perceive information that is somewhat foreign to your normal mode of operation.
Now that you are in a good starting place you will be able to better apply yourself to the counseling session.

Empathy/Telepathy- Since you are already in a light receptive state, it should be fairly easy to create an entrainment/resonance pattern with the other person. Since you are not going to be working in a deep trance state, catch the other persons eye for a few moments. It only takes a few seconds, since it is a natural process, allowing you to become more in synch with one another. Since you are most likely in a more mentally balanced and synchronized state than they are, due to your preparations, they will very likely pick up your mental pattern, making it easier to get a read on them later.
I am not going to tell you how to be an empath or telepath here (you can find out more about the topic in “Telepathy and Empathy: Getting started” by Dale Power.) rest assured though, that you have the capability to do these things, even without special training, as long as you stay relaxed and try! Practice and training help, but these are natural abilities you already posses.
As you speak to them, pay attention to any signals they are giving you. Remember that these signals may not always match what they are thinking on a conscious level at the time. Ask about these impressions, not to see if you are correct, but to see what they mean to the other person. Even things that do not make sense to you may be deeply important, so don’t shy away from what may seem to be a strange idea. Just ask them and see what happens.

Also, be aware of feelings of evasiveness or deception. Don’t hold it against the person if they try to hide embarrassing moments or feelings, this is natural, but do address it and point out it may be happening. With feedback they may be able to correct themselves.
Data tracing/linking- Often people will describe to you situations and individuals that are important to them. From their thoughts and descriptions of people and events you can gain direct information about how these other people actually feel and the true nature of the situation. This deeper understanding will allow you to aid your client in dealing with specific situations correctly. By asking careful questions you can cause your clients subconscious mind to supply you with honest information about what they should be doing in regard to these specific individuals and topics.
Part of your job, once you have this information, is to lead them to realize what they already know, with as little direct information as possible coming from you. Don’t tell them, for instance, “You like this person romantically, but they don’t feel the same way about you”. Instead ask questions around the situation until they come to the conclusion on their own. This assumes your understanding of the information is correct of course. It is possible to misinterpret things, even with absolutely correct information, which is another reason to take care in your statements! It is possible, for instance, that their subconscious mind will present to you the common feelings of the person on an issue, rather than the facts of the situation. If they often feel that no one likes them, lets say, it may look from the information they give you, that no one does, even though this is a false perception on their part! Try and make sure that your interpretation does not negatively impact the session, or the person, just as a general course of action.
Precognition- In their description of events to you, it is common to get a fairly clear sense of how a situation is going to turn out. You may be able to determine what will go well for them, as well as what is doomed to failure.

While you can warn them of what might work and what won’t, it is important to help them generate a specific plan of action, if they are going to make the best use of your warning. Make sure that they understand the situation and what their options are. Coach them in making a solid plan, including contingencies for unwelcome events. Any strategy generated by your client will have a greater impact on them and more likely be followed to completion. This does not ensure success, of course, but they will have a better chance at changing the direction of events with this foreknowledge and proper planning.
It is also possible to foresee health and emotional troubles well before there are any external signs. Some problems may indeed be needful to the growth of the person involved, so try to be sensitive to such situations, but many problems can be fixed well before they happen, saving grief all around.
Entrainment- As the other person is already entrained to you, it is possible to guide them to deeper states of mind, to a more complete connection with their own subconscious mind, by controlling your own thoughts.

By slowly moving into a deeper more synchronized state, you will draw them into a similar level as well. Once there, if you slowly and carefully begin to pay more attention to the conceptual content of thought, they will, on certain levels, do the same.
This will tend to make them more aware of themselves and what they need to do in life. Which will, in turn, allow them to deal with any problems they may have more effectively.
I know that this sounds easy to accomplish and with practice and attention to detail, it really is fairly straight forward, as all of these methods are based on naturally occurring processes. Still it takes some effort and the ability to get your own ego out of the way to be highly effective. Lack of ego involvement allows you to give advice suited to your client, rather than what you think they should do, based on your own opinion and preconceived notions of correct living.
This kind of work is, perhaps, the future of psychic ability. It combines a wonderful level of service to others with solid technique and utility that is easily seen by many people. All things that psychic work has been accused of lacking in the past.

Otherwise you may not share the feelings you really NEED to share and it can cause problems in the counseling as well as in the relationship.

Even if you find someone you think you both like and you attend a session and realize that the therapist is not a good fit for one of you, move on. Find someone who fits both of you and allows you to be at ease. The success of your marriage may depend on it.

Take Action!

You may be committed to saving the marriage. You may even attend every session and lay all of your feelings out on the table. But if you are not taking action towards fixing your marriage then you may as well be flushing money down the toilet.

Sharing, talking, and learning will help you in your marriage to some degree, but if you dont make changes in your marriage that reflect your new-found information then your marriage itself wont change.

Life Coaching and counseling to individuals is still popular today, and it is a very good cause! Many people are in the stage of their life where they can realize the gaps and needs, and are looking for people who are able to help lead and guide them to secure areas of life.

Now there are many types of life coaching available and the investment in coaching and prophetic counseling can vary as much. Some life coaches are licensed therapists, psychologists, etc. and can offer life coaching as a sideline to their regular career. Meanwhile, some life coaches are experienced ministers and spiritual leaders, and their practice is based on biblical teachings and/or spiritual guidance to guide people in their path of change.

For example, our work is based on the prophetic leadership as part of our Life Coaching program. Using the traditional model of life coaching and Christian counseling, and also heavily relying on the guidance and the teachings of the Bibles prophetic insights and guidance, we specialize in personal life points. Although not as popular as the traditional therapy or counseling, Christian prophetic counseling and advice is highly specialized and personalized to the client.

Life coaching in this method will usually require constant feedback from the client, prayer for and over the client, as well as client assignments. Then as the person begins to see changes in their life and circumstances, they can determine whether to continue with life coaching on a continuous basis, or just periodically counsel with a coach in order to "tune-up" certain areas of their life.

Another advantage that we have with our age of technology is the ability to efficiently communicate by telephone and internet.
